  bilingual and mandarin immersion

The human brain is genetically predisposed for language and babies start uttering baby babble as early as two months.

By the age of eight months infants begin to try out simple words like mama, dada, baba.

The language area of the brain becomes really active at 18 to 20 months.

A toddler can learn ten or more words per day (isn't that amazing!) giving them a potential vocabulary of about 900 words at age three, increasing to 3000 words by age five.

Children who are talked to more show significantly higher commands of vocabulary. However it is important to use words in their absolute context because knowing a word is not the same understanding what it means. This will facilitate a much easier transition for learning to read.

The window for acquiring new languages opens soon after birth and tapers off around ten to twelve years. Beyond that age learning any language becomes more difficult.

A young brain from two months is programmed to recognize, distinguish and respond to foreign phonemes.

Children in a bilingual environment are able to acquire both languages perfectly well.

They may be a little slower to speak their second language but since language is primarily a social act, total immersion in a language will assist, provided the environment the language is being spoken in, stimulates properly and efficiently the meaning of the words in context.

At Sunshine House we believe strongly in the opportunity for bilingual groups and total immersion in Mandarin.

After all, our children are here in Asia for whatever length of time and it is a prime opportunity for children to develop that specific aspect of the brain during the critical period of development.
